OmegaOne 1-ToGo Brings The Mobile Internet Straight to Your Device

Doug Goldring has posted a cool write up over at My Today Screen on OmegaOne’s 1-to-Go, a cool new way to access the Internet.  From Doug’s review:

Overview: So.  What is 1-ToGo?  I think I have never had so much trouble in a review explaining just what a program is.  It’s a little bit of everything.  So, let’s start with what this is not.  It is not a mobile web browser.  You will still need one of those (Pocket Internet Explorer will work just fine).  This is a web-based applet which will open within your existing browser.

The application looks pretty cool; and offers quite a bit.  Doug’s got a very thorough write up on it, and its definitely worth a read.

Behind the Scenes with echo

As part of joining the crew at GearDiary.com, I signed on to be the techie behind the scenes.  As luck would have it, Judie sent me a laundry list of issues that she wanted resolved.:-)

So, off I went into the log files to start sniffing around.  The first thing I noticed was that the error log was filling up with Page Not Found errors and they were actually being triggered by a lack of a 404.shtml file.  The other error was being caused by a lack of a favicon.ico file.  The quick and dirty explanation for these errors is that the 404.shtml file is what’s shown to a user when they access a page that doesn’t exist.  Try this link to see what I mean.

As for the favicon.ico, it’s a little icon that shows up next the URL of the page in your browser and next to the entry in your bookmarks, if you bookmark the site.  It turns out that the favicon.ico file used to only be requested if the page was actually bookmarked, but in the latest versions of the browsers, it’s requested all of the time. So, I took the easy way out and manually created a 404.shtml page (very little dynamic stuff being served), and I created a temporary favicon.ico file since we’re in the midst of getting a new logo.  There we go–no more error messages. :-)

The other wild part is that the browsers themselves were actually creating the error since they were requested a favicon.ico file that didn’t exist, which then generated the error message for a page not found.  The ironic part of course being that the page that wasn’t found was the Page Not Found page.  Ok, that was really a little too geeky. ;-)

The HTC Hermes / Dopod 838Pro Review

Many of you by now will recognize the name HTC as the abbreviation for the Taiwanese based company High Tech Computer. They are the world’s largest manufacturer of Pocket PC and Smartphone OS based PDAs, and as such they are responsible for many of the more recognizable devices which are rebranded by companies including Hewlett Packard, i-mate, Audiovox, and Dopod - to name a few.

The device we’ll be looking at today is known by several names including the O2 XDA Trion, the MDA Vario II, Orange SPV M3100, and the Dopod 838Pro. This review will specifically cover the HTC Hermes branded as the Dopod 838Pro; while some of its included software may differ from other branded versions, the general hardware specifications should be about the same.

Similar to the HTC Apache / Sprint PPC-6700 which I reviewed last year, the Hermes features a compact touch-screen PDA form factor with a left-sliding keyboard which only appears when needed. The Hermes is intended to function not only as the user’s mobile phone, but also as a fully functional PDA, an email and text messaging center, and a compact means to wirelessly surf the internet.

Hermes Teasers

This post was created for Mitchell Oke, but hopefully many of you will enjoy the Hermes eye-candy…

There is a 0.1 mega pixel video camera on the front which may also be used for low resolution self portraits. The silver bar across the top toggles to select email or Pocket Internet Explorer; these buttons are re-mappable. So in other words, if you are using a different internet browser, the button can be set to open it…or a different application entirely.

Hermes Top

Here is the thumb-wheel, and next to it is the OK button which will back out of the open window to the previous screen. There is also a re-mappable Voice Recorder button; I usually set this button to eReader. ;-)
