Once I had decided that I was going to Mobile World Congress in Barcelona Spain, I knew that one of my biggest "hidden" expenses was going to be what appeared on my mobile phone bill well after I had returned home. Beyond hamming it up with wandering oompah bands at Mobile World Congress, Helena and I managed to  get hands-on time with some of the new devices and technologies that will be causing a stir in 2011 and beyond!

HTC's New Android Devices

HTC won me over with their lovely new ChaCha. After using the BlackBerry Bold for a week, with its tiny little keys that I never got used to, the generously sized keys on the ChaCha, along with its softly curved body … I so wish that my Tru SIM had been installed in one of these babies.

A number of us here at Gear Diary quite like HTC products.  Heck, I even had one myself for a while before I got my iPhone.  Apparently, though, we're not the only ones:  GSMA has chosen HTC the "Device Manufacturer of the Year" award, beating out rivals like Samsung, Apple, Nokia, and all the rest.  Pretty impressive, honestly.  I'd go on about HTC devices, but heck, why don't you just read about the award below?

Helena and I were able to spend some time at the HTC VIP lounge this afternoon, time that was well spent fondling the six devices introduced by HTC earlier today. Of course the one that most captivated us was the 7" Flyer, HTC's new tablet device. It will be shipping with Gingerbread instead of the newer Honeycomb, which seemed odd given that all of the other tablets and the majority of new phones we've seen have featured the newer version of Android. As expected, HTC made a big showing this morning by introducing six new Android devices -- the  HTC Flyer, HTC ChaCha, HTC Salsa and next generation HTC Desire S, HTC Wildfire S and HTC Incredible S phones. I hope to have hands-on pictures and impressions direct from the MWC showroom floor later today, but in the meantime, here are the press releases and stock photos.

The partnership between Nokia and Microsoft that was announced the other day has caused some speculation that the Intel powered AppUp store in general, and the MeeGo in particular might be the losers in this story.

Helena and I spoke with Peter Biddle, General Manager to AppUp Products and Services, and he said that despite this partnership, AppUp and Meego will thrive. Proprietary systems have a place in the ecosystem, and so do open ones.

CES saw the release of the new Sony Ericsson Experia Arc, but tonight we got to see three new Experias: the neo, the pro and the long-awaited PLAY -- the Playstation phone. Oh my. MWC is in full swing and all the big companies are pulling out the stops on the new phones. None of this is really any surprise until I saw the assortment on "mini" phones starting to stack up. I first though to myself who wants a mini phone? Super huge capacitive screens are what we are screaming for. Verizon & Skype recently held a press conference in Barcelona, Spain during the Mobile World Congress.   So what is bringing the largest U.S. carrier and the popular internet-calling giant together?  Voice calls over the internet made on Verizon's wireless network, of course!  In a move that was certainly strategized as a hit to other U.S. carriers (cough, AT&T, cough), Verizon looks like they'll be further embracing the decline of the landline and putting their bets not only on cellular calls, but data-intensive VoIP calls.

HTC is introducing a new Windows Phone this morning -- the HD Mini. Specifications on the first press release that I received were pretty sparse, as it only said the HD Mini would be "sleek, well-crafted and easy to use," that it would have a capacitive touchscreen, and that it would offer personal WiFi for your computer or other devices. Because HTC was being stingy with the specs (up until almost midnight last night), I consulted my Magic 8 ball to answer the questions not covered by the vague initial press release, and these were its replies: Will it have a Snapdragon 1GHz processor? Magic 8 ball says: "Outlook not so good" Will it have something less powerful? Magic 8 ball says: "Definitely" Will it have 512MB ROM? Magic 8 ball says: "Yes" Will it run Windows Phone 6.5.3? This morning HTC is introducing two new Android handsets, the Legend and Desire. Both sport "an enhanced HTC Sense experience that will ... take Android to the next level." Both will also have "broad improvements to applications including the browser, email client and others." The Legend includes a 3.2" AMOLED HVGA display.  HTC has replaced the trackball with an optical joystick, "surrounded by a narrow button to improve usability without interrupting its unique design." Mobile World Congress 2010 kicks off with Microsoft officially unveiling a whole new operating system for Windows Mobile, Windows Phone 7 Series. How crazy is that? Maemo, the Linux that runs on the N Series Internet Tablets and more recently the N900 will merge with Moblin, to create MeeGo according to information coming out of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.  Moblin was a Linux desktop that was started by Intel and targeted at Tablet devices.

So many new phones these days it's hard to keep track of what's a real piece of hardware and what's purely a rendering or speculation. I wanted to compile a small list of post CES, pre MWC phones that may or may not make it to consumers hands. I kept the list down to phones planned on a US launch; while some have concrete launch dates, some have yet to be seen. The mobile world is the fastest growing area of technology today. Phones will soon be surpassing computers for web browsing, document shuffling, social media and most light computing, including laptops.  Phones will probably soon become self aware and create a network of autonomous robots that take over the world as we know it. Archos is well known for their various size PMP's and Media Tablet devices. A few months ago their was speculation of an Archos 5 Tablet phone slated for late 09 release or early 2010. So far no word on a release date or any pricing, but some more information has slipped out. The case manufacturer Noreve has a link on their site for an Archos 5 case that is in the works or out of stock. Sources state that this company usually has some pretty reliable sources, meaning that the case could be ready before phone's release. Which is really not uncommon anymore.
