Sometimes there is no better way to demonstrate that what a company is saying is pure rubbish than by putting it to a simple test. Apple's Siri was released to simultaneous cheers and yawns - cheers from those who use it and yawns from Microsoft and Google (and their fanboys) saying that they already have the same technology. Living in Texas, one of my favorite apps on my iPhone is a translation program, that let's me translate words and phrases between English and Spanish.  (And English and French--my daughter is taking French in high school.)  Nice to see, then, that there's a new Windows Phone app, Utralingua, that gives you some English/Spanish translation capability.  You can get it at the Windows marketplace for an MSRP of $19.95.

Much has been written about how the biggest winner in two recent events - HP dumping webOS and the success of patent infringement cases against Android handset makers by Apple and Microsoft - is Microsoft's Windows Phone 7. For me, one of the issues I have had with Windows Phone 7 is connectivity. You need the Zune desktop software to do pretty much anything. With my Android phone I can just plug it in and mount the drive - and since I have all of my music through iTunes (like ~78% of the world) anyway THAT requirement isn't an issue. When Windows Phone 7 launched a year ago, it had lost several features from when it was announced. Those features were promised within a month ... and ended up coming within 6 months via the disastrous 'minor update' and later NoDo update. I say disastrous since it was rolled out slowly yet bricked devices, failed installs, was pulled and relaunched several times, and just overall was worse than any update of a modern mobile OS (webOS, iOS, Android) in recent years. Back in the days of yore, when I was running Windows Mobile (ack! thpt!) on an HTC Universal (the phone of a thousand names), one of the companies whose products I came to trust was SPB.  While I'm not quite as fond of their apps on the iPhone, they're a solid software outfit, and I think their Windows apps are pretty durn good. Well established mobile software companies are slowly rolling out apps for Windows Phone 7.  Ilium Software, a long-standing mobile software company, has just released its first WP7 app, eWallet GO! It's practically a given that apps make or break a smartphone platform. And Amazon's Kindle apps are incredibly popular on Android, Blackberry and iOS devices. Now Amazon is announcing Windows 7 will also be rocking a Kindle app! This is big news. Considering how long it took Amazon to expand to Android and Blackberry, jumping on Windows 7 indicates a lot of confidence. It's also a not so subtle slap in the face to HP/Palm, since it leaves WebOS in the cold as the only smartphone platform without any Kindle love. While I'm pretty attached to Android, this does give me a reason to at least look in the direction of Windows 7. It's no shocker when the news hit the net yesterday that Microsoft pulled the plug on the KIN line of  social phones. Verizon will continue to carry and sell the current line on KIN,  but Microsoft will not be shipping them to Europe as planned in the Fall. Things may be about to change with photos and videos demoing a version of Windows Phone 7 running on an HTC HD2, in almost all it's glory. At this point it's a tad choppy while they work on getting the graphics drivers up to speed, and it hasn't been released onto the interwebz yet, but as a fan of the hardware and only so-so on the software, this could make me take up an HD2 full time, if only to enjoy the latest in this space that Microsoft has to offer.

Let's face it, no one enjoys contacting their IT department at work.  By the time that call comes it is usually preceded by a lengthy bout of frustration, swearing and pounding of fists.  While it used to just be your PC or Mac giving you fits, now you are probably just as exhausted trying to get your new smartphone to work properly.    Add to the fact that you may be miles -- if not an entire continent! -- away in today's global work environment and your aggravations multiply ten fold.  At the end of the day you just want the @#$%! thing to work. As more and more people bring smartphones into their lives, these mini-computers that surf the web, check email and even make a phone call now and again become our lifelines for both work and personal business.    If you are lucky enough to use one of these devices -- be it BlackBerry, iPhone, Android, Symbian, or Windows Phone -- you probably cannot imagine going back to when you did not have this convergence of functions with you at all times. But what happens when you do run into problems?   It will always occur when you're traveling or during the most important meeting ever scheduled.   One tool that I've been using lately could very well be the thing you need.  It's called LogMeIn Rescue+Mobile, and it lets you support and manage smartphones remotely right from your computer.   It doesn't matter if the person having a problem is in the next room or on the other side of the globe.  You can remote into their device and fix the problem, saving them from lengthy aggravation and (hopefully) leaving them  once again loving their smartphone of choice. SKTools, a popular system maintenance suite for Windows Mobile, has been updated to version 4.5.1.4. This update brings a new tool to SKTools, File Explorer. The newly implemented tool brings lots of functionality features such as Copy, Move, Rename and Delete as file operations, preview for certain file types, change attributes, create shortcuts, etc. Here's the list of the latest changes:
  • TuneUP!: added tweak "Enable/Disable Call Record menu item" (WM6.5+)
  • "File Explorer": set/clear file attributes for current item
  • extendent tweaks definitions file format
  • 4.4 -> 4.5 compatibility fixes

A few years back, I was a big fan of OnCourse Navigator version 5 running on Windows Mobile PDAs. The interesting things here is that OCN5 was really just the name for the North American release of Navigon MobileNavigator. And although OCN 5 wasn't terribly stable, it was one of the best-looking navigators out there at the time. So then they disappeared from the North American market. OCN 6 was actually a rebadged iGo 6, not a Navigon product anymore. To paraphrase my favorite beer commercial, "I don't always use Windows Mobile, but when I do, I prefer SPB Mobile Shell."  SPB Software is known for making a number of great Windows Mobile programs, but this week they announced that they're venturing outside of that familiar territory and into the Android and Symbian neighborhoods with the next Mobile Shell release, version 5.0.  Mobile Shell is a launcher on steroids, with lots of great customizable settings, plug-ins, and widgets, and has long been one of the first things that I load on any Windows Mobile device.
