As someone pointed out in response to the Galaxy Nexus commercial - that was made by Google, which is why it was excellent. Now we get one for the Galaxy S II made by Samsung ... and it is NOT. I had already written about just how great the Samsung Galaxy S II commercial was a couple of months ago, but at the time Apple and Samsung were in the midst of the 'copy me, copy you' spectacle and so I wrapped it around a tongue-in-cheek accusation of copying. Certainly Samsung has learned that the macho specmanship approach of Motorola has a very narrow appeal, which shows very well in this new ad as well. Have you seen the commercials for the Droid Bionic? As my kids put it "it doesn't make me want the phone, but it sure is cool'! And the Verizon Wireless iPad commercial? Yawn! So the day has finally come where the official announcement has been made for the Samsung Galaxy S II to hit US soil. The press conference is under way right now (Dan is there as I type), and just as we thought details are slim. A 4.5" SAMOLED+ screen is destined for AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint, while Verizon is holding off for the Samsung Galaxy Prime, or Nexus Prime or whatever they decide to call it. One item that came through in Apple's Supplier report last week was a marked increase in issues with child labor in supplier facilities, particularly in China. The report noted that Apple " audited 127 facilities and found 91 cases including 31 workers who had been hired prior to reaching the legal age, but were no longer underage or no longer employed at the time of the audit." Before you get out the Apple-bashing hammer, remember that EVERYONE making devices is using these facilities - Dell, Asus, Acer, HP, even Samsung gets loads of stuff from these plants. If you are like me, you love the iPad but were thrilled to see Samsung doing well with the Galaxy Tab. I wrote back at the beginning of December how the Galaxy Tab had sold 1 million units in two months, and Doug wrote about more mainstream attention being paid to the wonderful little Tablet. The Galaxy Tab has been out for several months now and, while it has not gotten nearly the amount of press attention that the iPad did--what possibly could short of, I dunno, planet-wide apocalypse?--it has gained considerable notice and attention in the geek world. While I may not agree with the press release below that "the tablet market is exploding", there's no question that we're in for a big expansion of it.  My guess is, 2011 will be "the year of the tablet."  (Of course, I've been wrong before.) In any event, one of the first competitors in the tablet market space is of course the Samsung Galaxy Tab, running the Android OS.  And iLuv doesn't want you to scratch or ding or otherwise mess up your new Tab, so they're offering a new line--"available in late December," they tell us--to protect the Tab.  So surf on over to the iLuv site and check them out. It took me quite a while to get my free iPhone 4 case from Apple.  I could have gotten one sooner, I suppose, but I wanted to wait for the Speck case.  Speck cases are, in my view, more durable and better looking than the other offerings that Apple had available, and I was willing to wait to get what I wanted, instead of settling.  (Not that I have been unhappy with the iFrogz case that I got while I was waiting.) Just so you don't all think that my geekly faculties have gone on holiday and that my sole job 'round these parts is telling you what to buy and where to shop for your Holiday consumption needs, here's a little info about the new Galaxy Tab by Samsung. Uh oh...more bad news for Symbian (and Nokia). Boy Genius Report has posted that Samsung is getting out of Symbian entirely, to the point where they're shutting down any developer support at the end of the year. This move just makes Nokia's strategy to spin Symbian into a separate foundation even weirder. If you hit up Symbian.org and search for phones running the latest Symbian software, the only results are Nokia phones. With Sony Ericsson and Samsung both dropping Symbian, is anyone else left at the party besides Nokia? I've used Symbian before, and while it's not a bad operating system, even the current version feels very dated.
