There is always loads of data to mine in corporate earnings announcements, and yesterday's Apple announcement is no different. Dan covered the highlights including iPhones, Macs, iPads and iPods ... but I noticed a mention at GigaOM about AppleTV sales. Apparently AppleTV sold 1.4 million units during the last quarter. I really didn't think too much about that because I am constantly reading about how more and more game consoles are serving as full-service home entertainment systems since they can run Netflix, Hulu and more. I also just assumed that Roku and other 'set top boxes' were dominating much like Kindle and Nook ebooks dominate Apple's iBooks. Sarah and I have been watching "All-American Muslim" on TLC. It's a glimpse into what it's like to be both Muslim and American in Dearborn, Michigan. And while admittedly it's slow at times, we've really enjoyed seeing how different people approach their religion, and learning more about the different ways people practice, even within their own families. So we were very surprised when the hardware store Lowe's pulled their ad support after the "Florida Family Association" complained about the show. When we built our house, for various reasons we decided not to put a TV in every room; we installed one 55" LED VIZIO on the wall in the living room with all the home theater options, and we called it good. MTV Launched 30 years ago today, on August 1st 1981. Over the decades, the music video art form has changed in some ways yet remains a product in service of a song. The channel itself has become somewhat of a joke in many ways, as in the late 1990's the 'music' part became a minority share, and now we have a channel more focused on Snooki (Jersey Shore) and Amber (Teen Mom) than Katy or Kanye. Have you caught any episodes of Inspector America? That's the show where Timothy Galarnyk, an "infrastructure safety inspector with over 35 years of experience", goes around the country checking out our cities bridges, roads, water-systems (among other things) in order to show what is right or wrong with the way our infrastructure is being maintained or problems are being solved. It is amazing to look at the image above and realize that reflects the top TV shows the year that seniors graduating high school this month were born! Many of the shows - certainly Seinfeld, Rosanne, Frasier and Home Improvement - are classics easily found in syndication now. It's a bit shameful, but I still watch "Grey's Anatomy". It's my soapy guilty pleasure! I settled in last night to catch up on last night's episode, and was surprised to discover that surgeons using Twitter was a big part of the storyline! I won't spoil it for you, but I will say that even when the jokes were predictable (like the Chief mistakenly saying he wanted to check out Dr. Bailey's 'tits' not her 'tweets'), it was a cute storyline, plus the power of social media saved the day. One of the first things Kevin and I bought for our new house was a 55" VIZIO LCD HDTV from Sam's Club. I'll admit that we were a little bit nervous about purchasing a VIZIO, because we had not heard much about the brand, and the only places that we had ever seen them were at Wal-Mart and Sam's Club (we don't have a Costco nearby, but they sell them as well). This year 23 products made the list.  Instead of detailing all 23 I just wanted to share some of the ones I think you'll find most interesting here.

At the end of last season my family started watching Glee, and we have been fans ever since. I wouldn't call us 'Gleeks' since we miss episodes here and there and will watch other things in the same time slot on occasion - but we enjoy the show and look forward to it each week. This week's episode was particularly good for a few reasons: it touched on homosexuality in a sensitive way, also looking at bullies and bullying, preconceived notions based on appearance, and other stuff. Oh, and there was the normal wall-to-wall array of high-energy songs and dance numbers! I don't know about anyone else, but one staple of my childhood cartoon viewing was the Rocky & Bullwinkle show. The high-pitched squirrel and block-headed moose, along with the not-so-well-disguised Russian spies Boris & Natasha, My. Peabody & Sherman, Dudley Do-Right, and so on wove a wonderful set of memories that have lasted through the decades.

Today we learn that the creator of those shows, Alex Anderson, has died at the age of 90 after suffering for years with Alzheimer's disease. For many years it was assumed that Jay Ward, the producer of the shows, was sole creator. That is because he copyrighted them after Anderson chose not to move to Los Angeles

Last night we got the 'official' news of what anyone who remotely follows popular television programming has known for weeks - Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler are joining Randy Jackson to make up the panel for the new season of American Idol. As I have stated before, my family is of the opinion that Idol has been on a pretty drastic slide since ... well, even before Paula left, since they started having more obvious 'plants' (Carly Smithson) in the line-up.
