One thing modern technology and being a gadget freak brings is lots of monthly bills. iPhone, Netflix, Satellite, home internet. When you think about it, it seems we are being nickel and dimed to death with monthly charges. Being a father of two and earning a meager wage, the addition of more of these monthly charges is not an option. There are many new mobile internet devices that look compelling, but I never can work the monthly fees into my budget. Enter Virgin Mobile’s Broadband2Go.
Virgin Mobile was kind enough to send me a Broadband2Go Wireless USB Modem to try out. The big difference in the Broadband2Go offering is the lack of… Continue reading on Gear Diary ...

According to website Crunchgear, Virgin Mobile today has announced a pay as you go plan for mobile broadband. When the service goes live later this month expect to pay $150 for a contract free Novatel Ovation MC760 USB dongle. The Pay-as-you-go VM Top-Up cards are slated to be available in 100MB, 250MB, 500 MB and 1GB sizes. The 100 MB costs $10 but must be used within 10 days. The 250 MB costs $20, 500 MB costs $40 and 1 GB costs $60. The pricing is a bit steep but this is a remarkable opportunity for the infrequent mobile broadband user to get connected on the Sprint EVDO A network.

Cellular carrier Virgin Mobile announced today that they’ll pay the phone bill of any monthly “subscriber” or any prepaid subscriber who has been with the company at least two months on their new $49 unlimited plan (being introduced April 15). The agreement will only cover 3 months of service and it is included free with all monthly plans and the new $49 prepaid unlimited plan.

Don’t forget that Virgin Mobile starts offering unlimited voice services tomorrow – July 1, 2008. Since Virgin Mobile is a prepaid carrier – there are no contracts and no activation fees. Everything is on a month to month basis. Roaming is included in the plan. In most areas Virgin uses the Sprint network to route phone calls. If you want unlimited text messaging you can add that on for another $10 per month. This is the perfect plan for anyone sick of two year phone contracts and early termination fees!

According to a June 24, 2008 article in the Financial Times, struggling prepaid provider Helio is set to be acquired by struggling prepaid provider Virgin Mobile USA. Helio is known for their hip youth oriented phones and prepaid service featuring an unlimited plan that includes voice, text and EVDO data for $99. According to the Financial Times, Helio claims slightly under 200,000 subscribers while Virgin Mobile is just over 5 million. Virgin Mobile also rolled out an unlimited prepaid plan for $79 which we reported yesterday. Both services primarily use the Sprint cellular network to route their calls.Link: Virgin and SK in US mobile link-up

Beginning July 1, 2008 Virgin Mobile will offer unlimited nationwide prepaid cellular service with no roaming charges, no annual contract, and no activation charges. The price for this unlimited calling plan will be $79.99 per month, representing possibly the lowest prepaid unlimited cellular plan offered by a major carrier (Virgin Mobile uses the Sprint phone network). This rate could best the prepaid offering from competitor (and acquisition candidate) Helio by $20 per month. Unfortunately text messaging and data services are not included in the unlimited plan though an unlimited bundle may be added for $10 per month. Looks like the long awaited Samsung Slash (the first Samsung to appear on Virgin Mobile) is hitting the retail stores. One Howardforum member scored this $80 phone as it arrived at the local Radio Shack. For the price, this seems like a great entry level phone – especially given that it’s sans contract on a prepaid Virgin Mobile pay as you go plan. It packs a 500 entry address book, VGA camera, two email addresses, two instant message account names, photo caller ID, personalized ringtones, speakerphone, bluetooth. Make no mistake – this isn’t a top of the line stunner. As inexpensive phones go – this one looks as if your kids might actually WANT to use it. And if they want… Continue reading on Gear Diary ...
